United Republic launched its first campaign today to encourage towns across America to pass resolutions in support of getting money out of politics. The campaign was announced in an email to United Republic’s 300,000 members across the United States and anyone can do it. You don’t need an army of millions to get such resolutions passed.
The action comes after Los Angeles became the largest and most recent city to pass a similar resolution last week, following in the path of other cities including Madison and Dade County, Wisconsin; Missoula, Montana; and Boulder, Colorado.
All of those actions were the result of citizens who are fed up with money in politics and who got involved in their local government. As more of us choose to act, these cities will be the tip of the iceberg.
Once you sign up, we’ll give you a step-by-step guide, and more information that will help your hometown become the place to proudly say democracy is not for sale.
United Republic’s resolution has three main points, which cut to the core of everyday corruption that has become the new normal in our government:
RESOLVED, the People of [City], [State], stand with United Republic and communities across America in protecting our republic from the corrupting effects of well-financed interests, by establishing that:
1. Corporations should not enjoy the Constitutional rights of human beings.
2. All public elections must be publicly funded.
3. Independent political spending must be limited and made transparent.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the People of [City], [State], hereby instruct our state and federal representatives to end the auction of American democracy by enacting resolutions, legislation and constitutional amendments to advance these principles.
