Two stopwatches show campaign fundraising in the 2012 presidential election: $80,000 an hour by Obama and $103,000 an hour by Romney

The 2012 presidential election will certainly be the most expensive ever, and the candidates are already going full throttle, racing for cash. Every hour is another chance to get donations, which pay for everything from T.V. ads to travel to image consultants. The sums of money are staggering: in the month of May alone, Obama raised $60 million and Romney raised $77 million, according to the Huffington Post.

As this infographic shows, that means the candidates are collecting over $80,000 every hour, on average. To put that in perspective, the median American salary is just $24 an hour. So while it might take you or me a week to earn $1,000, Romney’s donors give him that every 35 seconds. That’s how Romney outpaced Obama by $17 million in May, making him the candidate to beat.
