Super PAC Tuesday

Stat of the moment

Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney's super PAC has outspent every other group so far this campaign season.

The Republican candidates and their super PACs have spent about $10 million on TV and radio ads in the seven states that vote on Super Tuesday. The Associated Press reports that more than half of that spending comes from Restore Our Future, which is running attack ads on Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum on behalf of Mitt Romney:

The infusion of cash into this coming week’s contests has swelled total ad spending in the GOP presidential race to more than $75 million, according to a review of Federal Election Commission data and information provided to The Associated Press by several media buyers. About $40 million has been spent by the Romney campaign and Restore Our Future to support the former Massachusetts governor.

The latest figures provide more evidence of the oversized role that these groups, known as super political action committees, have played in the campaign.

The bulk of Super Tuesday spending is directed at Ohio, where, the Sunlight Foundation reports, super PACs have spent $3.8 million on ads trying to win over voters in the swing state.
